Faust’s whatever

There’s a really great bar across the river from here. It’s called Embury and at Embury they make the most fantastic cocktails I ever drank. I’m not going to link to it, because there was no such thing as Internet during Prohibition so Embury doesn’t have a stupid website*, but you can search for Embury on today’s Internet and get some search results or whatever and then you’ll know what I’m talking about.

But that’s not really the point. The point is that I have a favorite drink there - called Faust’s Pact - and I took a first stab at replicating it at home last night for an out-of-town guest and the results weren’t 1000% perfect but hot damn did that drink turn out good anyway so before I forgot what the heck I put in it, I wrote it down and Ben helped make the writing a lot better and anyway, here, make this as soon as you possibly can:

2 grapefruits (aw yeah)
4 shots gin (Bombay Sapphire thanks to Jason)
1 shot rum (just decent anejo rum)
half a jalapeno
splash pomegranate juice
5 dashes aromatic bitters
3 tbsp simple syrup or agave nectar
a few sprigs rosemary from my garden (optional)
a pinch cayenne pepper

Juice the grapefruits. Strain out the seeds and pulp. Pour the spirits. Mottle the jalapeno (and optional rosemary). Dash the bitters and splash the pom. Squirt the syrup. Mix the stuff together in a mixy thing with ice. Shake it like a moneymaker. Pour into two or three glasses or whatever who knows. Dust with cayenne pepper on the surface of the liquid. Drink it up it’s a Faust’s whatever and it didn’t cost $40 you are welcome.

* Errata: Embury has a website now!
