Jan Vermeer, “I still haven’t figured out how anyone can think Damien Hirst is any good”, c. 1668-1669.
You can tell by the quality of light in Vermeer’s paintings, by their worldly themes and accoutrements, that he must have spent a lot of time closely scrutinizing and verbosely criticizing the works of other, contemporary Dutch painters. I heard he and Rembrant were total frienemies, pretending to like one another when they’d meet in the streets Utrecht or Amsterdam, but relentlessly antagonistic to one another on deviantArt.
