Photography by Noah Vaughan, a school chum of my wife from her days at the Art Institute of Chicago. Click though for more from his site Rubbish Goes Here.
Hey! I know Noah! Noah probably doesn’t know this, but his college day plein air landscape paintings done in the dead of winter inspired me to revisit painters like Anselm Keifer in the context of my relatively newfound love of perceptual painting. They also inspired me to just try harder. He used to go out on 10-degree days with a french easel, fingerless gloves, and 4-ft canvases, and spend the entire day burrowed near a creek, painting icy tundra, and come back with masterpieces. And amazingly, never any frostbite.
Noah still stands out as one of my early peer heroes. Peeroes, let’s call them.
