Damn, I love realism.
Merlin’s post earlier today reminded me of just why that is. Simply put, the most fastidious realism is still an incredible flight of fancy on the part of even the most observant painter. From De La Tour and Vermeer, to Richard Estes and Chuck Close, to Ann Gale or David Kassan or Antonio Lopez Garcia (above), great realism illuminates the unfathomable drama and complexity inherent in even the most mundane scenes. I think I take comfort in that.
