Ahmed Shah Massoud, AKA “The Lion of Panjshir” The Taliban knew perfectly that the 9/11 attacks would provoke a fierce military response from the US, who would, in turn, enlist Massoud’s Northern Alliance in its fight against the Taliban. So, killing Massoud, while already a coveted military accomplishment in itself, became a defensive strategic imperative.
